Why Your Car Needs a Differential

The differential is located underneath your vehicle. Its purpose is to move the power from the engine to the transmission and the wheels. It allows your wheels to turn at different speeds. Your vehicle's differential contains gears that are lubricated with differential oil. It is sometimes referred to as gear oil.

If the differential oil in your vehicle gets old or dirty, it will break down and begin to lose its effectiveness. In order to keep this from happening, the oil in the differential needs to be changed out on a regular time schedule. Most manufacturers recommend changing the differential oil around the 30,000-mile mark. Some will have a different schedule.
